EXPRESSIVE ART
“If you are looking at a motivational coach for your artistic development, I would strongly reccomend you give Michelle April a call.”

The difference between art therapy and expressive arts is virtually nothing except:
Context: Not all work in art therapy relates to trauma and painful wounds, but it could. In expressive arts, sensitive issues certainly arise on account of the process (and that is ok, if not great!), but the focus is not so much healing deep and painful wounds, but more, phycho-educational and opening pathways to creative expression. For example, I might run an anger management group in art therapy, but a corporate team building exercise in expressive arts to illustrate in extremes. Time commitment: Art therapy explores the inner workings of individuals or group members over several weeks or months. Expressive arts can be held in one or two workshops. It is not the environment for healing deep and painful wounds, because that takes time. Confidentiality: If an art therapy group were being conducted in a glass house, curtains would be required to keep the work of participants confidential and to create greater safety. In expressive arts the option would be available to participants to either close the curtains or not have curtains at all. Expressive arts is an art class or workshop. Art therapy is therapy. Based on these distinctions, individual or group needs and/or goals determine whether art therapy is needed or expressive arts classes or workshops are a better fit. |
I work with Individuals: All 'types' of individuals including older adults, men, women and children wanting to explore art in a non-judgmental, expressive way.
I work with groups: Corporate team building (up to 25 participants), extended workshops (ideally no more than 8 participants), private parties, brief workshops, psycho-educational groups, and task groups. Expressive art themes: Team building, development of expression, expanding horizons, brain storming, and creative blocks. |
